Lake Guntersville Rat-L-Trap Classic

Following the 186 boat turn out for the 2013 Rat-L-Trap Classic, this year we plan to break the 250 boat mark! We expect large bags of hefty, pre-spawn fish to come to the scales. Some people might think we’re crazy for coming in January, but if they know anything about fishing Rat-L-Traps on Guntersville, then they know the potential for double-digit fish being weighed in! Last year we fished on Feb 2nd and there were dozens of 20 lb plus bags brought in despite the snow. By moving the tournament up 7 days, we seriously doubt that the weather could be any worse this year. We’re excited and expecting to have a great turnout!

Along the way, we’ll make a stop on Lake Guntersville in Alabama, where we plan on topping the 186 boat turn-out from last year! Following that, there are stops in the California Delta and at Lake Toho in Florida.

Lake Fork Rat-L-Trap Shoot Out

Bass looked for cover on Lake Fork Saturday morning, but many couldn’t keep from being sniped by the anglers firing away at the first ever Rat-L-Trap Shootout. Fishermen from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama, and other states hit the water to see who was the best Rat-L-Trap strapping angler on Lake Fork.

When the ‘Traps were holstered and the anglers came to weigh-in it was Paul Wirta and Shawn O’Malley that came away with the title. The winning lure was a “Floating” Rat-L-Trap in chrome/black back with a white-feathered hook on the tail. They fished it shallow around vegetation to get their key bites. The duo also managed to take the big fish 1st place prize with a fish under the 16 inch Lake Fork slot that weighed 2.38 lbs.

While many fishermen reported catching multiple 4 to 7 lb. fish, they all were under the 24 in. slot, and no over 24’s were brought in. Despite the nasty northwestern front that moved in and whipped up winds, all the anglers seemed to have a good time on the water, and everyone made it in safely.

2013 Rat-L-Trap Classic

The 2013 Rat-L-Trap Classic was held at Lake Guntersville on Feb 2, 2013. Anglers from over 9 states participated to see who was the best on the Rat-L-Trap that day. Nineteen teams weighed in with over 20lb. bags with the biggest fish weighing in at 9.6 lbs. These amazing results occurred in water temps of 49 degrees and snow coming down in the morning!

Interestingly enough, the team that won it all consisted of two college students, Taylor Luna and Cameron Gautney, from the Muscle Shoals area. They even finished ahead of the Elite Series Pros. The Trap they used was a custom-painted color that we had never seen before. It was developed by Bob Risner of Florence, Alabama. Taylor and Cameron said the color made all the difference, as they couldn't get a bite on their other colored Traps.
